Postdoctoral Research at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) provides a unique environment for postdoctoral training, with opportunities for postdoctoral research in 21 Departments and seven Institutes.
Postdoctoral Policies and Support As part of The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, RWJMS has clearly stated policies to protect the rights of postdocs. The UMDNJ Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA), under the direction of the UMDNJ Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Kathleen Scotto, is responsible for reviewing policies regarding postdoctoral education and financial support, and for tracking the progress of postdoctoral education and development.
Postdoctoral Career Development Robert Wood Johnson Medical School has a dynamic Postdoctoral Career Development Program under the direction of Dr. Martha Soto and with the assistance of Ms. Brenda Coleman. Monthly lunchtime seminars expose postdoctoral fellows to job skills training and to speakers with broad expertise on topics ranging from grant writing, to interview skills to non-traditional careers for scientists.
Postdoctoral Career Development events are organized with active participation from postdoctoral fellows, through the Postdoctoral Association (PDA) of UMDNJ and Rutgers. The Postdoctoral Career Development Program and the PDA host the Annual Postdoc Appreciation Day Symposium in the fall, the largest research and career development event at RWJMS.
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School sponsors two programs that provide educational training for postdoctoral fellows: BIO Links: BIOscience Links to Teaching Programs Launched in the spring of 2007, the BIO Links program provides Rutgers University and Robert Wood Johnson - UMDNJ Molecular Biosciences graduate students and postdocs the opportunity to volunteer their time in local public schools. The program is a partnership between the Molecular Biosciences graduate students and postdocs, and science teachers at local public schools. BIO Links volunteers are paired with a science teacher from a local school and make a commitment to visit one class per week for nine weeks.
