ResearchWelcome to the website for Research at UMDNJ— Robert Wood Johnson Medical School! Research at our Medical School covers a broad spectrum, from clinical and basic studies designed to improve the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases to fundamental studies exploring new areas of molecular biology, biotechnology, and informatics. This range of leading research provides a wealth of research training opportunities for postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and medical students. We invite you to explore, through this website, the rich and exciting work of our faculty and their research colleagues. UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is made up of 22 academic departments on its three regional campuses in New Brunswick, Piscataway, and Camden, New Jersey. Each of the departmental websites describes the research initiatives pursued in that department. In addition, the Medical School is home to several major interdisciplinary research centers. The Cancer Institute of New Jersey received designation as an NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center in recognition of the Cancer Institute’s strong core of basic, translational, and clinical research; clinical trials; cancer prevention and control research; and research training and continuing education. At the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM), faculty conduct basic research in cell and developmental biology, molecular genetics, and structural biology. The Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI) is dedicated to a broad understanding of health effects associated with environmental and occupational chemical exposures and to the development of public policies related to these exposures. The Child Health Institute of New Jersey, housed ina new $72 million, 150,000-square-foot building in downtown New Brunswick, will become a comprehensive biomedical research center focused on molecular genetics and development that will address childhood diseases by integrating new knowledge into education, research and treatment. The Cardiovascular Institute (CVINJ) is dedicated to excellence in cardiovascular disease treatment, research, education and community outreach through its four major focus areas: clinical trials, cardiovascular pharmacology, disease management and clinical outcomes, and biomedical engineering UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School also collaborates in the conduct of biomedical research with Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, with which it shares graduate programs and a campus in Piscataway. Research space at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School has grown by 300,000 square feet over the last two years with the expansion of the Cancer Institute and the opening of the new Child Health Institute of New Jersey in downtown New Brunswick. Research space will also be incorporated into the planned Cardiovascular Institute and Stem Cell Research Institute scheduled to open in the near future. "Robert Wood Johnson Medicine", the magazine of the Medical School, recently featured several of its historical strengths. The Medical School, for instance, has a strong commitment to the recruitment and mentoring of new faculty. Over 150 faculty were recruited last year, and each faculty member is assigned a senior faculty mentor (see " Partners in Progress: Senior and Junior Faculty Pool Talents" in RWJ Medicine, Winter 2004). Another strength has been our commitment to the training of physician-scientists through our MD-PhD program. The fourteen-year-old partnership between UMDNJ and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey was recently joined by Princeton University (see MD-PhD Program Doubles in Size: Princeton Joins Program as Doctoral Partner in RWJ Medicine, Winter 2004). The research programs of the school are described in greater detail in the home pages of the individual departments and institutes, the descriptions of the core research facilities, and in the profiles of the faculty. |
