Medical Student Pathology Instruction

Currently pathology material is being introduced into an integrative 2-year pre-clinical science program, an evolutionary change from the days when pathology and other disciplines were confined to separate, departmentally regulated silos. This integration is intended  to produce better-educated physicians with a more wholistic grasp of the different medical disciplines.

Pathology material is taught to small groups of 12-15 students who view images of gross and microscopic
lesions and discuss the disease processes with their instructor. The students become familiar with the basics of morphologic analysis and also master the fundamentals of disease as presented in the textbook "Robbins' Pathologic Basis of Disease." In addition the students manipulate and discuss digital virtual slides so that they become accustomed to the kinds of diagnostic inquiry that form the basis for much of the pathologist's mission.
