Dr. Levine Will Receive the Kirk A. Landon Prize for Basic Cancer Research

Dr. LevineArnold J. Levine, PhD, professor of pediatrics and biochemistry and resident member, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, was selected to receive the Seventh Kirk A. Landon American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Prize for Basic Cancer Research. The Kirk A. Landon Prize, according to the AACR, is among the largest awards in the world offered to cancer researchers from a professional society of their peers. It is awarded to “an outstanding scientist who has made seminal cancer research discoveries, which have accelerated progress against cancer and have implications for future discoveries and contributions to cancer research.” Dr. Levine is best known for his work involving the discovery of the p53 tumor suppressor gene, which has long been considered a building block in molecular cancer research.

Joseph R. Bertino, MD,  professor of medicine and pharmacology and interim director, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey, recently received two important honors: the 2008 Joseph H. Burchenal Memorial Award for Clinical Research, from the American Association for Cancer Research, and the 2008 Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement, from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. 

The Rev. William C. Gaventa, MDiv, associate professor of pediatrics, and director, Community and Congregational Supports at the Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities in the Department of Pediatrics, received the COMISS Medal from the Network on Ministry in Specialized Settings (COMISS).

Bruce G. Haffty, MD, professor and chair, Department of Radiation Oncology and associate director, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), was named president-elect of the American Board of Radiology (ABR). His two-year term will begin in June, to be followed by a two-year term as president of the organization.

Suhayl Dhib-Jalbut, MD, professor and chair, Department of Neurology, was named chair of the Scientific Program Committee for the World Congress on Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis to be held in Montreal in September. 

Federico Sesti, PhD, associate professor of physiology and biophysics, chaired an international symposium on ion channels at the 52nd Biophysical Society Annual Meeting and 16th International Biophysics Congress Meeting in Long Beach, California. Dr. Sesti spoke about his work, describing a kinase that is part of a voltage-gated potassium ion (K+) channel in worms.

Robert Like, MD, professor of family medicine, was named editor-in-chief of the online newsletter MD Net Guide’s MDNG, Focus on Multicultural Health Care.

Stephen F. Lowry, MD, professor and chair, Department of Surgery and senior associate dean for education, was appointed to the editorial board of The American Journal of Surgery.

Alvin J. Salkind, DChE, emeritus professor of surgery, was the co-recipient of a 2007 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award presented by the New Jersey Council on Science and Technology.

Yvette M. Janvier, MD, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics, was named Advocate of the Year by the Ocean County Department of Human Services Advisory Commission on the Status of Women.

Roseann Marone, BS, MPH, instructor of pediatrics, received the March of Dimes Maternal Child Health Reality Award. Ms. Marone has coordinated the Robert Wood Johnson AIDS Program, Department of Pediatrics, since 1983.

oseph Nezgoda ’08, was one of 15 medical students nationwide selected for the 2008 American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation Leadership Award. In addition, he is serving his third and final year as a representative to the AMA House of Delegates.

Ann M. Stock, PhD, professor of biochemistry, Investigator, HowardHughes Medical Institute, and member, The Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine, was nominated to stand for election to the Council of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In January, Dr. Stock chaired the Sensory Transduction in Microorganisms 2008 Gordon Research Conference in Ventura, California.
