Eric B. Chandler Health Center
Celebrates 20 Years
-Mayor of New Brunswick Named Honorary Gala Chair-
New Brunswick, NJ – The Eric B. Chandler Health Center, a federally qualified community health center, has played a key role in the New Brunswick community for the past 20 years, offering medical services to all who are in need, regardless of a person’s or family’s ability to pay. In celebration of this milestone, a gala to benefit the center will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at The Heldrich. New Brunswick Mayor James Cahill has graciously agreed to serve as Honorary Chair for the Gala.
“I am very pleased that Mayor Cahill has agreed to serve as honorary chair for this important event,” said Peter S. Amenta, MD, PhD, interim dean of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “Mayor Cahill realizes the importance of the Chandler Health Center and is an advocate for affordable healthcare for all New Brunswick residents. I truly appreciate his leadership in advancing Chandler’s mission through this benefit.”
The Eric B. Chandler Health Center’s goal is to eliminate barriers to quality and family-oriented health care for its diverse, multicultural population by providing comprehensive acute and chronic care to patients of all ages. In addition to primary care services and routine pediatric and gynecological care, Chandler offers specialized services including a childhood immunization program and education programs for adolescent mothers. Chandler also provides care for senior citizens, dentistry services, and psychiatric services by referral, cancer care and podiatry care.
“It is a privilege to serve as honorary chair for the Chandler Health Center Gala,” said Mayor Cahill. “Since opening its doors, Chandler has ensured the availability of essential, and quality healthcare to those who often can least afford it. Chandler is an important and invaluable part of our City’s network of healthcare providers.”
A broad spectrum of social services is also available as well as community-based health and wellness programs, such as the Family Education Program, a series of health education seminars on topics such as domestic violence, immigration, managed care and health maintenance.
“The Chandler Health Center serves as an anchor in our community bringing together residents, health care providers and community leaders who support our mission,” said Yesenia M. Hernandez, chair of the Chandler Community Advisory Board. “Chandler also serves as an educational facility offering valuable programs to promote healthy lifestyles, and most importantly, the physicians and staff provide affordable, comprehensive health care to anyone in need.”
Integral to providing comprehensive care, interpreter services are provided to patients at Chandler, its annex center, as well as at area hospitals to ensure that patients understand the options available to them throughout their care and treatment. Chandler Health Center provides more than 50,000 patient visits annually.
Patients who are uninsured may receive primary and preventive health and dental services on a sliding fee scale, based on verified income and dependents. The staff at Chandler assists families with choosing various insurance options that they may qualify for including the New Jersey Family Care program for uninsured children and adults, Medicare, Medicaid, or the Emergency Medicaid program for undocumented pregnant women. Chandler also participates in various managed care programs, as well as commercial and private insurance. Chandler is operated jointly by UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Eric B. Chandler Community Advisory Board, Inc.
The center, conveniently located at 277 George Street, is open six days a week: Monday through Wednesday and Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm, Thursday from 8 am to 7:30 pm and on Saturday from 8 am to 12:30 pm. An annex, located at 123 Church Street, which provides the same services is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm.
