Residency

Letter to Applicant

Dear Neurology Residency Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in our neurology residency here at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Our residency uses only one hospital, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. It is in the commercial center of town, adjacent to the flagship campus of Rutgers University. New Brunswick is a vibrant college town with ample entertainment options and is one hour from New York City by train or car.

Our department’s clinical neurology faculty comprises 18 adult clinical neurologists in eight subspecialties whose teaching effort is supplemented by four basic science faculty in our department and by clinical faculty in pediatric neurology, psychiatry, neuroradiology, neuropathology, neurosurgery, sleep medicine and pain medicine.

We offer a three-year “advanced” program, which means that you will have to arrange a PGY-1 year in internal medicine separately. Our residency existed for decades as a rotation site for the program at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) in Newark. The first class of our own residents started in July 2008.

In the Spring 2010 Match, we are seeking three residents to start the PGY-2 year in July 2011. Of our three class years, two have three residents each and one has two.

In applying to residencies, please do not confuse our program with those at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, which is in Newark, and at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Camden, which operates at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ.

We have no maximum interval since medical school graduation and no minimum USMLE scores. We consider IMGs and DOs. We support only J1 visas. US clinical experience in addition to the PGY-1 year is recommended but not required.

Please contact the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) www.aamc.org/eras. ERAS accepts applications beginning September 1. Our application deadline is November 1. After a preliminary review of your completed application, we may contact you via ERAS to schedule an interview. Interviews are by invitation only and will be scheduled from November through mid-December.
We look forward to hearing from you as you begin this exciting phase of your medical career. For questions on administrative aspects of the program, please contact our residency coordinator, Ms. Janet Ryan, at (732) 235-7731.
