Message from the Chief

Division faculty members are interested and involved in all aspects of our mission including education, research, clinical practice and service.

Division research interests include pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease - through the Crohn's and Colitis Center of New Jersey, development of novel biomarkers for diagnosis of pre-cancerous conditions of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon, and mucosal immunology. Faculty members are also very involved in studies of the diagnostic and therapeutic management of biliary and pancreatic disorders and outcomes research in interventional endoscopy.

Monthly GI Research Conferences provide an important forum for interdisciplinary collaboration among clinician researchers, basic scientists, post doctoral fellows, residents and students.

Division members participate extensively in clinical conferences, including combined GI/Hepatology, Surgery, Pathology and Radiology Conferences, Pathology and GI/Radiology Conferences, GI Pathophysiology Conferences, and GI/Hepatology and Medical Grand Rounds.  The Division also hosts an Annual GI Symposium, now in its 17th year.

The GI Fellowship Program is highly competitive.   Each of the fellows spends about six months in clinical/basic research under the supervision of an MD or PhD faculty member. Fellows spend the remaining time in clinical pursuits. Last year a 2nd year resident was awarded an NIH grant for GI research.  Additionally, two fellows presented at the American Gastroenterological Association Annual Meeting.

Division members are very active in both academic and clinical pursuits. Last year. faculty published 10 full-length papers and presented 12 abstracts at various national and international meetings. During the same period, clinical activity including endoscopic procedures increased at a double-digit rate.

Extra-departmental faculty activities include community service, contributions at regional symposia, as well as l ocal, national and international lectures.

I invite you to learn more about the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology by exploring our web pages.
