Course Description:

We are in a global age. While the world economy was the first to follow this path, it has quickly spread to other areas such as health. This concept of Global Health can be summed up very simply- shared problems and shared solutions. This view stipulates that health concerns, issues and solutions must be viewed on a platform that transcends national borders. This idea has been an inspiration to countless professionals throughout the world and as a result it has turned Global Health into the next frontier for those aspiring to become active global citizens.

Therefore, recognizing the need to stimulate our students’ interest on the topic, the Office of Global Health is introducing a 2 credit elective course in collaboration with the MSBS/MBS program. The course is designed to provide insight on current issues pertinent to Global Health. It will be a combination of weekly lectures and seminars taught by our distinguished faculty as well as web based teaching modules from the Global Health Education Consortium.

Topics:
-Global Mental Health
-Pediatric HIV: Global Issues
-Women’s and Reproductive Health in the developing world
-Global Health collaborations in Africa, Asia and Latin America
-Alternative Medicine Approaches: US and Global perspectives
-Immigrant Health

With this course, we hope to outline important Global Health issues at home and abroad and hopefully inspire some students to get actively involved.
