A New Way of Affecting The Shape Of Health Care RWJMS Retired Faculty Association
Mr. Randolph Haviland will describe President Obama’s approach to obtaining health care reform via “Community Discussions.” In contrast to the Clinton administration’s “top-down” attempt at health care reform, the Obama administration has organized and facilitated local discussions on the topic. Mr. Haviland, a former Assistant Dean of the Rutgers University Mason Gross School of Arts, has been active in these discussions. The results of the RFA discussion will be recorded and will be of interest to the New Jersey Senators, task groups growing out of the White House Healthcare Summit, and the members of the administration concerned with health care reform. After the presentation, a brief business meeting will be held to consider proposals for the RFA budget and membership dues. Also, the date, time, place, and agenda items for future RFA meeting will be discussed. Also, please find attached the latest newsletter from the RWJMS Retired Faculty Association. Those who would like to serve on the RFA Program Committee should contact David Riley, Chair of the Elections and Membership Committee (tel. no. 732-235-7840 or riley@umdnj.edu). Please RSVP Barbara Brodsky (tel. no. 732-235-4048; e-mail: brodsky@umdnj.edu) Falling Off the Academic Bandwagon Sponsored by the Faculty Mentoring Program, New Jersey Medical School March 31, 2009
Dr. Schwartz will discuss career issues of the late postdoc and early faculty years. Although this is especially focused on information collected concerning women scientists but it will be valuable for all junior faculty. I encourage mentors, chairs, and any other senior faculty who are concerned with faculty development to attend. For further information please contact: Ellen Townes-Anderson What are all these opportunities? Which should I apply to? NIH Recovery Act Meeting Hosted by:
This meeting will discuss opportunities and strategies for responding to recent NIH announcements stemming from the Federal Stimulus Package. Dr. Pazzani will give a brief presentation of the current NIH programs available and any that are anticipated to be released. This will be followed by an interactive discussion of strategies and exchange of ideas, ending with some Q&A. Please distribute this information to the faculty and researchers in your department and any colleagues that may be interested in attending. Here are two items of advice now: 1. Much of the money will go to supplements. Administrative supplements are expected to have a relatively high acceptance rate. They are 5 pages, add a Postdoc, a graduate student and 500 mice, to your existing R01 (or R21). http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-09-056.html While the deadline is open, I suggest applying by April 15. File your tax return late. 2. There is no limit on the number of NCRR High-End Instrumentation Grant http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-09-118.html (equip: $600k-8M) that may be submitted. Application Due Date(s): May 6, 2009, Letter of intent April 6. The NCRR High-End Instrumentation Grant (HEI) program encourages applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase a single major item of equipment to be used for biomedical research that costs at least $600,000. The maximum award is $8,000,000. Additionally, it is expected that the funds will be expended expeditiously, within 18-24 months from the date of award. Instruments in this category include, but are not limited to, structural and functional imaging systems, macromolecular NMR spectrometers, high-resolution mass spectrometers, cryoelectron microscopes and supercomputers Faculty usually bargain for an academic discount on equipment. Offer to pay full price if the company will include 3-5 years of maintenance free. See http://grants.nih.gov/recovery/ for all recovery act opportunities. Michael J.
