Required Training Courses and Forms

The following is a list of the required courses, forms and training modules that must be completed depending upon your job function.  Please note that these modules are subject to change.  This list is not inclusive and other training may be necessary depending on your job requirements.  Please check with your department to ensure you have completed all required training. 

Following either the instructions and/or the appropriate link below will take you to the necessary form or training.  You should print out any certificates of completion following your training.  Please keep a copy for your records and submit another copy to your manager to keep in your file.

Required Mandatory Compliance Courses for All Employees

All new hires should complete the following mandatory courses and forms within the first 30 days of employment:

  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) - Annually

Please note: Please let us know if you work less than 160 hours per year.  You may be exempt from the following training if you and do not require specialized training:

  • Corporate Integrity Agreement (CIA) / Code of Conduct - annually - see chart for specialized training
  • Specialized Training (only if you are responsible for coding/billing and/or arrangements) - annually

  • Faculty Time and Effort Reporting System (FTERS) - Semi-Annual Faculty Reporting

    Please note: You are exempt from FTERS if you work less than 160 hours per year

    This reports are utilized to adhere to research compliance principles governing direct charges to grants and contracts and the associated indirect costs. In accordance with Federal OMB Circular A-21, faculty are required to complete the form twice annually. Faculty are required to complete the form on-line.  Please note that this report has been designed to quantify and distribute University costs and is not intended as an appraisal or evaluation tool.  Go to the FTERS website at: https://fters.rwjms.rutgers.edu

Required Courses for Study Investigators

IRB Human Subjects Protection Training - Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)
This training is required for anyone who is listed as an investigator on any study including MDs, PhDs, RN, APNs, research nurses and coordinators as well as some medical technicians.

Required Courses for Health and Safety Training

EOHSS offers specific training to a variety of groups within the University based on tasks and job duties.

Required Courses for Clinical Based Staff/Faculty Who Have Direct Patient Care

In addition to the above, all clinical based staff who have "direct patient care" must take the following training:

Required Courses for Clinical Based Staff/Faculty Who DO NOT Have Direct Patient Care

In addition to the above, all clinical staff who work in patient care areas but do not have direct patient care also must take the training as outlined at http://rehs.rutgers.edu/


Required Courses for Laboratory Based Staff, Students, Interns, Faculty or Volunteers

In addition to the above, laboratory-based faculty and staff also must take health and safety training annually, as outlined at http://rehs.rutgers.edu/rehs_Drive_Safely.html

Any student, volunteer, intern or assistant who will work in your laboratory, paid or unpaid, MUST attend EOHSS sponsored laboratory safety training  PRIOR to beginning any work in the laboratory.  If the student is participating in a joint program they must attend EOHSS sponsored laboratory safety training, regardless of training received from other institutions.

As a mentor, faculty sponsor,  the PI  is responsible for ensuring that the student , volunteer, intern or assistant attends all required EOHSS-sponsored laboratory safety trainings PRIOR to working  in the laboratory .

For high school students or persons under 18 years of age, faculty sponsors MUST obtain the necessary approval from the Research Office and Human Resources PRIOR to the student beginning work in the laboratory.  High school students are required to attend EOHSS sponsored laboratory safety training PRIOR to working in the laboratory.   This links provides a brief tutorial on the process and all required forms: http://rwjms.rutgers.edu/research/sr/index.html
