About the Program

The graduate program in Physiology and Integrative Biology (PIB) offers both PhD and MS degrees. Hosted by the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at UMDNJ–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and with participation of research laboratories from both UMDNJ–RWJMS and Rutgers, this program is designed to provide training at the interface of genomics, cell biology and organismal physiology. Specific topics include molecular endocrinology, cardiovascular research, cancer biology, membrane structure and signal transduction, host-microbial interaction and the physiological bases of diseases. Students under the PIB will receive their degree from both UMDNJ–Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Rutgers University–Graduate School–New Brunswick. PhD students will receive full tuition waiver, a stipend, and health benefits for the duration of their studies. Rutgers University campus housing may be available to PhD students.

PIB is part of the Consolidated Programs in Molecular Biosciences co-sponsored by UMDNJ and Rutgers University. Students enter PIB by applying to the Consolidated Programs in Molecular Biosciences. Direct admissions to PIB can also be considered for students with advanced background (e.g. students transferring from other universities with advanced courses or M.S. degree). In the latter case, certain credit hours can be transferred toward the graduate degree. In addition to the PhD program, a program leading to a Master of Sciences in Physiology and Integrative Biology is offered in PIB to meet the needs of students with particular interests.
