Pharmacotherapeutics, MSBS 5045S

Course Director:   Dr. Don Chen & Joseph Fondell

Department of Pharmacology

Course Description:
This Pharmacotherapeutics course is designed for students enrolled in the MS/MBS programs. It is offered as a 3-credit lecture/discussion course focusing on the therapeutic uses and effects of major drugs. The main goal of this course is to familiarize the students with basic principles of drug’s actions and reactions, and their therapeutic applications and side effects. At the end of the course, students are expected to recognize most perscribed drugs, understand their mechanisms of action, and realize how a disorder is altered by the drug therapy.  This course will also promote self-education and independent learning about drugs to assure up-to-date knowledges.  The content of this course is divided into two main sections: 1) Basic Pharmacology, covering drug-receptor interactions, signal transduction, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and drug-drug interactions, and 2) Pharmacotherapy with organ-oriented and disease-specific topics.
