This block will cover aspects of renal, endocrine and reproductive health, disease, diagnostics and therapeutics.  The section on renal medicine will review the functional anatomy and physiology of the kidney and then discuss the common disorders of the kidney and urinary tract that are encountered in every day practice.

In addition, selective disorders of renal tubular function, which cause alterations in electrolyte and acid-base status, will also be examined.    Following this two-week section, we will focus on sexual health, sexual behavior and reproductive diseases. There will be panel discussions, small and large group series that examine these issues and how they may impact patient care.  The course will close with a section on endocrine disease. A brief review of normal anatomy and physiology followed by a discussion of the systemic manifestations of endocrine disorders will be delivered. Multiple “for credit” sessions involving patient oriented problem solving will help the student reinforce competency in this course. Correlation with Patient-Centered Medicine sessions will guide development of history taking skills and physical examination of the patient.

The learning objective for this course is to introduce the second year student to a broad overview of renal, endocrine and reproductive pathologies and treatments to construct a solid foundation for the clinical years.
