Welcome to the Department of Neurology

Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Website of the Department of Neurology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick. We share our mission with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in striving for excellence in medical education, research, patient care and community service.
The Department of Neurology underwent significant expansion over the past five years. Nationally recognized clinical faculty provide consultative and in-patient care for patients with Stroke, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Myasthenia Gravis, Peripheral Neuropathy, Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementias, Neurogenetics, Neuro-opthalmological disorders and Headache. The Department also has specialized programs including Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX) treatment for movement disorders and spasticity, and an Epilepsy monitoring and surgery program. The Department houses two centers of excellence in Parkinson's Disease and ALS. Two additional centers were recently established and certified: a Multiple Sclerosis Center, and a JCAHO certified Stroke Center. The Department conducts NIH and industry funded clinical trials in movement disorders, ALS, Stroke, and multiple sclerosis.
The Department's research activities continue to expand. Physician scientists and basic scientists on the faculty conduct funded research in the areas of Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Neurogenetics. These preclinical and translational research programs are housed in the Laboratory of Neuroscience, and in the newly established Center for Neurodegenerative and Neuroimmunologic Diseases on the Piscataway campus.
An independent residency program at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick was established for the first time in July 2008. The Department's educational programs are enhanced with the recruitment of additional volunteer faculty who contribute to the education of medical students and neurology residents.
The Department of Neurology continues to serve the community by participating in patient education programs at the local and national levels.
I hope that you will take the time to browse through this Website to learn more about the services we offer and to read about our faculty.
