This fund was established in 1986 and serves to honor Dr. John A. Holowczak who was cherished by students, fellows and other members of the faculty and school as an outstanding researcher and educator.

Dr. Holowczak was a member of the legacy UMDNJ Department of Molecular Genetics, Microbiology and Immunology (MGMI) for 18 years before his untimely death in 1986. (Upon realignment of selected UMDNJ faculty and the merger with Rutgers University, MGMI was renamed the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, BMB.)

The fund was established for travel awards for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the department. The fund has been extraordinarily beneficial for the department as it supports the travel of BMB students and fellows to scientific meetings and to make presentations at national and international symposia. It provides these developing investigators with exposure to other colleagues in their area of research, which is a very important part of their experience and maturation as productive scientists.
