  • Blue Ridge Institute ranks our department among top medical schools for family medicine and community health Research, & our many department offerings have contributed substantially to this ranking.
  • We are New Jersey’s oldest, & one of the country’s largest family medicine & community health departments, with more than 50 outstanding full & part-time paid faculty members, & 150 volunteer faculty throughout New Jersey.
  • Our distinguished faculty includes four New Jersey and one National Family Physician of the Year award recipients, four University Master Educators, four associate/assistant Deans, & a University Vice Chancellor.
  • With a quality of care & primary care translational research agenda, department external funding is among the top public schools.
  • Educational and research collaborations exist with leading universities across the country, and with many Rutgers academic units and institutes.
  • Our New Jersey Primary Care Research Network, with 150 practices statewide, cares for an estimated 550,000 citizens yearly, & undertakes patient centered translational research as the state’s AHRQ recognized Practice Based Research Network.
  • As the birthplace of Robert Wood Johnson Partners, the integrated delivery system of Rutgers University and the Robert Wood Johnson Health System, the department has brought Rutgers resources to help solve healthcare challenges for the people of New Jersey and the nation.

  • The department’s Center for Healthy Families & Cultural Diversity is world renowned for its educational offerings, & our Center for Healthy Aging provides advanced education & clinical care in geriatrics.
  • We teach required courses in all years of the medical school curriculum, & run two outstanding Family Medicine Residencies: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH)/ New Brunswick and Centrastate Medical Center/ Freehold.
  • Our residency graduates practice nationwide, with 150 serving New Jersey, many in underserved communities.
  • The department’s Rutgers Network of Affiliated Family Medicine Residencies, the nation’s oldest residency educational network, provides collaborative offerings in eight New Jersey teaching hospitals & affiliated outpatient sites.
  • We offer competitive Clinical Fellowships in Geriatrics, Sports Medicine, Women’s Health, Maternity Care, & Health Policy.
  • We provide advanced Clinical Care at multiple sites throughout central New Jersey: in patients’ homes, in outpatient offices, including clinics serving the poor in New Brunswick & Freehold, & in affiliated hospitals, long term care, & assisted living facilities.
  • As the academic home of Community Health for the school, department’s activities extend from the Eric B. Chandler Health Center, New Brunswick's federally qualified health center, to educational systems, governments, businesses, & communities throughout New Jersey.
