Effective Direct Support Professional Development Strategies:
Training, Mentoring, and Career Pathways

Professional development enables staff to strengthen their practice and improve skills throughout their career. The most effective professional development plan engages staff to focus on the needs of people they support. It offers opportunities for them to learn and problem solve together for collaborative learning in order to ensure that everyone achieves success. Professional development programs should provide equal opportunities for direct support professionals to gain and improve the knowledge and skills important to their positions and job performance. It also ensures that direct support professionals stay on top of the most current standards and knowledge about best practices when supporting people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Participation in this training will help program supervisors and managers to develop appropriate training practices to meet the needs of their staff. Strategies on how to identify, implement and support training, mentoring, and career pathways will be reviewed.
