Community Programs

Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is among the few medical schools in the country that have included a commitment to community service as one of the prime missions of the school, equal with teaching, research, and patient care. This strong engagement and community is evident throughout the educational program, clinical services and training, and the diversity of the student body and workforce.

Eric B. Chandler Health Center

The Eric B. Chandler Health Center is one of the few federally qualified health centers (FQHC's) owned and operated by a medical school. The Chandler Health Center has a twofold mission:

  • The provision of high quality ambulatory health care services which are culturally sensitive, accessible and affordable.
  • The education and training of health professional students and residents.

Each year over 50 residents and 100 medical students rotate at Chandler. The Center provides a full range of ambulatory healthcare services, and in addition provides a number of community-based health and wellness programs including:

  • Alliance for Teen Health, providing access to medical, dental and mental health services for students from New Brunswick High School.
  • Shots by Two, a free immunization program for children cared for at Chandler.
  • Breast Health Community Outreach Program, a breast cancer outreach and screening program for minority women and seniors.
  • Community Outreach Unit, providing home visits, tracking of patients with multiple missed appointments, and contacting patients for needed follow-up.

Family Education Program, a project which focuses on a series of health education seminars on topics such as domestic violence, immigration, managed care, and health maintenance.

Each year, the Eric B. Chandler Health Center provides over 38,000 patient visits for health and wellness services.
