Certificate Program in Developmental Disabilities
The Certificate Program in Developmental Disabilities has been created as a joint effort between The Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities
at UMDNJ - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and the Rutgers School of Social Work Continuing Education and Professional Development Program. It is intended to enhance the skills and knowledge of professionals
working with people with disabilities in a variety of settings.
The new curriculum for the certificate includes eleven required workshops
and one elective:
Required Workshops (11 Days total)
Introduction to Developmental Disabilities and Social Work Practice
Lifespan Issues:

Starting Out: From Diagnosis Through Early Childhood

Supporting Youth with Disabilities in the Transition to Adult Life

Community Services and Supports: Evolving Approaches

Growing Old Together: Aging and Family Caregiving
Cross-cutting Issues:

Disability Policy Issues

Legal and Ethical Issues

Multicultural Perspectives in Developmental Disabilities

Supporting Families Through Change

Health and Wellness
-
Understanding and Managing Problem Behaviors
Electives (1 Day)
One elective is required in addition to the required workshops. Possible electives include:

Mental Health and Behavioral Aspects of Dual Diagnosis (MI/DD)
-
Sexuality and Developmental Disabilities
-
Autism and other Disability-specific topics
-
Guardianship and Developmental Disabilities
Program Notes:
Workshops are open to anyone interested, and can be taken by individuals not enrolled in the certificate program.
Certificates of Completion will be offered after each workshop. To receive the final certificate, a participant has to attend 11 required and one elective workshop, a total of 12 days. Participants interested in receiving the final certificate are required to fill out an application form and pay a one-time fee of $20.00.
All participants who attend the total number of hours for each workshop will receive Continuing Education Hours for Social Workers (CEH). Continuing Education Hours for teachers are also available (#1965).
