Certificate Program in Developmental Disabilities

The Certificate Program in Developmental Disabilities is a joint effort between The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and the Rutgers School of Social Work, Office of Continuing Education. It is intended to enhance the skills and knowledge of professionals working with people with disabilities in a variety of settings. Workshops may also benefit individuals who have an interest in developmental disabilities.

Certificates of completion will be offered after each workshop and a final certificate will be awarded when all requirements have been met. All workshops offered in this certificate program are designed as non-clinical workshops. Participants not seeking the certificate program are welcome to take individual workshops.

The curriculum for the certificate includes eleven required workshops and one elective:

Required Workshops (11 Days total)

  • Introduction to Developmental Disabilities and Social Work Practice

Lifespan Issues:

  • Starting Out: From Diagnosis Through Early Childhood
  • Supporting Youth with Disabilities in the Transition to Adult Life
  • Community Services and Supports: Evolving Approaches
  • Growing Old Together: Aging and Family Caregiving

Cross-cutting Issues:

  • Disability Policy Issues
  • Legal and Ethical Issues
  • Multicultural Perspectives in Developmental Disabilities
  • Supporting Families Through Change
  • Health and Wellness
  • Understanding and Managing Problem Behaviors

Electives (1 Day)

One elective is required in addition to the required workshops. Possible electives include:

      • Mental Health and Behavioral Aspects of Dual Diagnosis (MI/DD)
      • Psychotherapy for People with Disabilities and Mental Health Needs
      • Positive Behavior Supports in Schools
      • Sexuality and Developmental Disabilities
