Writing Our Journey:
Poems and Essays by Family Caregivers
In July 2008, The Boggs Center started a Writers’ Group for Family Caregivers. The purpose of the group is to give caregivers, primarily parents of children with developmental disabilities, an opportunity to tell their own stories, in their own words. This storytelling might take the form of essays, poetry, fiction, letters to loved one, letters to editors, song lyrics, or any other way each participant chooses to put his/her experiences into words.
The group meets every other month. There is also a listserv that enables members to share their work with one another between, or instead of, the in-person meetings. The group is facilitated by Kathy Roberson, Policy and Information Coordinator at The Boggs Center. Kathy has Masters degrees in both Social Work and English/Creative Writing, and is herself a parent of a young adult with developmental disabilities.
Each meeting has a suggested prompt, or idea, for people to write about. Everyone is free to interpret that prompt however they’d like, or write about something totally unrelated.
The following are the prompts we’ve had so far, and a sampling of some of our poems and essays. We hope you enjoy them! (Please remember that each piece of writing belongs to the writer, and if quoted, must be credited to that writer.)
For more information about the Writers’ Group, please email Kathy Roberson or call 732-235-9317.
