Boggs Center Celebrates 20th Anniversary
The
Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities marked its
20th year with a 20th Anniversary Colloquium and Celebration, held
on May 19, 2004 at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick , NJ. The theme
of the event was Disability Policy: Honoring the Past, Shaping
the Future.
Greetings and Introductions were brought by Harold L. Paz, MD, Dean
of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; The Honorable Leonard
Lance, State Senator 23 rd Legislative District and Senate Minority
Leader; Daniel A. Notterman, MD, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics
and University Professor; The Honorable James M. Davy, Commissioner
of Human Services; George Jesien, Ph.D., Executive Director of the
Association of University Centers on Disabilities; James W. Smith,
Director of the Division of Developmental Disabilities New Jersey Department
of Human Services; and Barbara Gantwerk, Director of the Office of
Special Education Programs, New Jersey Department of Education.
Six speakers shared with the audience how disability policy has been
shaped by the past and where it is going in the future. James W. Ellis,
Esq. Professor of Law at the University of New Mexico presented Reasonably
accommodating people with disabilities into America 's
constitution. Liz Obermayer, Consultant for the Council on Quality
and Leadership and Self-Advocate, presented Self-Determination
as a puzzle. Deborah Spitalnik, Ph.D., Executive Director of The
Boggs Center presented Love and public policy. Glenn T. Fujiura,
Ph.D., Director of the Illinois University Center of Excellence in
Developmental Disabilities presented Shaping the future: Emerging
challenges to disability policy. Ellie Byra, sibling and parent
of individuals with developmental disabilities, presented Don't
forget the cookies. Steven M. Eidelman, MBA, Executive Director
of the Arc of the United States presented Advocacy of the future
and the future of advocacy.
Recognitions in the spirit of advocacy and the contributions of Elizabeth
M. Boggs were given to Larry Taft, MD, Sue Swenson, and Robert Nicholas,
Ph.D. Acknowledgement was also given to those no longer with us who
greatly contributed to the work of The Boggs Center and the lives of
people with developmental disabilities: Elizabeth M. Boggs, Ph.D.,
Fitzhugh Boggs, David Boggs, Rebecca McDonald, Eddie Moore, Diana Cuthbertson,
Clarissa Prioleau, and Thomas McKenna.
Special thanks are extended to Ann Marie McLaughlin of Silver Lining
Studios for her photography, Art Realization Technologies for their
art exhibit, and the Joe Peterson Jazz Trio for their music.

Welcome
Mark Palmieri
Mark Palmieri is a new research assistant at the Boggs Center. 
He is working on the School Wide Positive
Behavioral Support Project with Dr. Sharon Lohrman and Dr. Richard
Blumberg. Mark has recently completed his second year in the Graduate
School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University
where he is a clinical doctoral student. He has worked in the field
of developmental disabilities over the past five years. Most recently,
Mark worked at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center as a
Behavioral Consultant. In that position he conducted functional behavioral
assessments and developed individualized intervention plans for students
with autism. His current research interests include the development
of school-based functional analysis procedures.
Congratulations
Verna Wallace, Community Resource Facilitator at the Elizabeth M.
Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities, received the Tribute Award
from the New Jersey Association for Persons in Supported Employment
at the Facing the Future Conference on Supported Employment and
Transition on May 5-7, 2004 in Trenton, NJ.
We are pleased to announce Sharon Lohrmann, Instructor of Pediatrics
at the Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities, has
been awarded her Ph.D. from Lehigh University.
Congratulations to Kathy Roberson, Research Assistant at the Elizabeth
M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities, who received her MSW
from Rutgers University.
Congratulations to Joseph Hagan, Student Assistant, who received
his MSW from Rutgers University and Desiree Villec, Student Assistant,
who received her Bachelors in Special Education from the College of
New Jersey.
