Events
The Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities in collaboration
with the UMDNJ Office of Multicultural Affairs, The New Jersey Council
on Developmental Disabilities, New Jersey Protection and Advocacy,
and other organizations, presented a two-day conference The
Latino Community and Disabilities: Confronting the Barriers on
September 17 & 18 at the Woodbridge Hilton in Iselin, NJ. Two Hundred
seventy-five community service provider, state personnel, parents,
educators, self-advocates, and professionals participated in the two
day event.
Friday September 17th focused on disability service providers in
New Jersey to build awareness about strategies for supporting individuals
with disabilities and their families in Latino communities in New Jersey.
Saturday September 18th focused on Latino community-based organizations,
people with disabilities, families, churches and faith-based services,
to build awareness about resources and services to support children
and adults with disabilities in New Jersey .
Appointments
Deborah Spitalnik, Ph.D., Executive Director and Professor of Pediatrics,
was appointed to the Board of Advisors for the Office of the Child
Advocate, State of New Jersey.
Kathy Roberson, Program Assistant, was
appointed to the Division on Developmental Disabilities Guardianship
Task Force.
Welcome
William "Billy" Allen
Billy
is a Master's in Social Work Intern at the Boggs Center. He is working
with Mr. Knox and Dr. Blumberg on several aspects of the Administrative
financial/policy and Grant programs. Billy will be Graduating from
Rutgers University with his M.S.W. in May 2005, specializing in Administration,
Policy and Planning. He completed his undergraduate studies in Social
Work at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. while doing his internship
working around Capitol Hill and a national disabilities organization,
specializing in multiple agency collaboration towards a common goal
and collecting specific research data for development of legislative
bills and policies. Billy has been actively working in the cross-disabilities
field since 1993. He has been deaf since birth due to Rubella Measles,
can read lips and converse one on one just fine. However, when in groups,
he uses sign language. His current research interest is multiple agency
collaboration and bridging deaf/hard of hearing with cross-disabilities
population.
Seniz Celimli
Seniz
Celimli is a third year Ph.D student of Clinical Psychology at the
Middle East Technical University in Turkey. She is doing her research
at the Boggs Center as a trainee of the Interdisciplinary Traineeship
Program under the supervision of Dr. Richard Blumberg. She is also
working on the project of Transforming Parent-Child Interaction in
Family Routines with Dr. Richard Blumberg and Dr. Sharon Lohrmann.
The focus of her research interests is the children with autism and
their family functioning processes.
Jacqueline Jackson
Jacqueline
is a Master's in Social Work Intern at The Boggs Center. She is pursuing
her degree at Rutgers University. Jacqueline plans to begin a new career
as a Social Work Disability Consultant evaluating programs to identify
accessibility barriers. She is also interested in Women's Health Issues
and Public Policy and plans to assist with implementing policy changes.
Jacqueline has been diagnosed with three chronic diseases Sarcoidosis,
Multiple Sclerosis and Fibromyalgia which all have often times landed
her in and out of hospitals during her educational career. Despite
all of these challenges, Jackson refuses to let her disability status
defeat her and has adopted a motto that "a disease is only temporary
dis-ease" and she states that "challenges are what motivates me to
succeed in life."
Rachel Spiar
Rachel
is a Master's in Labor and Employment Relations Intern at The Boggs
Center. Originally from Toronto , she is pursuing her master's degree
at Rutgers University in the School of Management and Labor Relations.
She brings her experience as an educational assistant and employment
specialist as well as her academic knowledge of labor relations to
her student internship at the Boggs Center, focusing on transition
and supported employment. Rachel will put her research at the Boggs
Center towards her masters thesis, studying how the transition and
employment supports provided to people with disabilities help their
long term employability.
Congratulations
The Boggs Center would like to congratulate fellow faculty and staff
members on the new additions to their families.

Congratulations to Patty and Bob Lang and family on the birth of
their baby girl, Elizabeth Mary, on October 4th, 2004.

Congratulations to Dan and Meg Baker on the birth of their baby girl,
Sophia Jade, on November 2nd, 2004 .
