Research has indicated that approximately 50% of the people with IDD have a co-occurring psychiatric disorder. It is important for us to build upon our knowledge, skills, and competencies in supporting individuals with a dual diagnosis in order to meet their complex needs. The first part of this session will explore key issues that are important in supporting people with a dual diagnosis, such as, diagnosis, medication, psychotherapy, and service collaboration. The second part of the session will review competency-based certification programs for staff as a workforce development initiative to improve and sustain quality supports/services/treatments for individuals with significant mental health needs.
