Selegiline Clinical Trial

New Brunswick, New Jersey

UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Department of Psychiatry in New Brunswick, New Jersey is conducting a study comparing an investigational medication versus placebo to help people quit smoking. All smokers participating in the study will receive individual counseling plus either selegiline (via a patch applied to skin) or a placebo patch.  All participants will also receive a free study physical.

Study Participants
Researchers are recruiting daily smokers at least 18 years old who are motivated to quit and are willing to cooperate with study procedures.  Approximately 75 people will be recruited from New Brunswick, New Jersey and the surrounding area.

An important exclusion for participation in this study is that you cannot be taking any medications for a a psychiatric / anxiety disorder.

 

Study Content
All participants will receive individual counseling based on the Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence. Participants will receive the study medicine or placebo.  All participants will receive treatment for eight weeks. All counseling, study medication and assessments will be provided at no cost to participants.  Participants will also receive a study physical at no cost.
 
The Medication
The study medicine, selegiline, is FDA-approved for treating depression, but has not been used to treat smoking.  It will be administered as a patch. Selegiline is designed to maintain levels of a smokers’ dopamine activity after quitting smoking as a way to limit withdrawal symptoms or the depression that sometimes accompanies quitting smoking. 

Study Requirements
Participants will be asked to attend 14 visits over a six-month period.  They will be followed up for a total of six months. Participants will receive a small payment to cover the time and expense of making clinic visits during the study.
