A Message from the Dean

Peter S. Amenta, MD, PhD, Interim Dean

Peter S. Amenta Interim DeanPeter S. Amenta, MD, PhD, professor and chair, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, has been appointed to serve as interim dean at RWJMS. Since joining the faculty 16 years ago, Dr. Amenta has made remarkable contributions to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and to the medical school. Dr. Amenta has been the chair of the department since 1998 and also served as director of the pathology residency program. During his tenure as chair, the department doubled in size and expanded its clinical, research, and educational programs.

In 1994, Dr. Amenta was appointed chief, pathology service, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) and served as the hospital’s senior vice president of medical affairs and chief of staff from 2002 until his appointment as interim dean. He has also served as chair of the Performance Improvement Committee at the hospital for the past eight years. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has clinical oversight responsibilities at RWJUH. These responsibilities extend to Bayshore Community Hospital, Southern Ocean County Hospital, and RWJUH at Hamilton. The department is also responsible for the state’s HIV rapid testing program.

Dr. Amenta directs The Cancer Institute of New Jersey’s Immunohistochemistry Shared Resource and is a member of CINJ’s Scientific Council and Internal Advisory Board.
